The Who

Some good friends are coming over next week from Scotland to see The Who perform in New York which led me to search the archives for a couple images I made in 1974 at Madison Square Garden.

They did 4 shows Dec 10, 11, 13 and 14 and I was able to photograph all 4 nights for Circus Magazine. In those days you could shoot the entire show and use a flash if you wanted. I did both...

Truly the golden age of rock and roll......

Not sure exactly where this image is from - possibly Madison Square Garden circa 1975...might be Philadelphia also. I used a an on camera flash for this - it was OK back then....I think I have finally come up with a decent workflow for processing these older Ektachrome slides/tranparencies (wow transparency gives my age away)....Anyone know where this is...

Another archival image from back in the film days. Workflow was an old studio trick in that I triggered the flash and painted with a long shutter speed - learned in the old days of film when I was a first assistant to a few NY advertising photographers, circa 1970. There was no way to see the image so you went completely by the seat of your pants.

There were artifacts but that was all part of my vision of live music imagery.Check out Keith Moon in the lower right of the image - quite the character.

Back in the day at concerts, meaning the late 60's and early 70's photographers were allowed to shoot the entire show - heck, you were even allowed you to shoot with flash. There was no 3 song and a cloud of dust rule.

I used to experiment with flash by shooting at various shutter speeds to get light trails using the tour lighting to paint on the image. It was impossible to see what you were doing but with some practice one could get a vague idea.

This capture of the Who was made just that way - probably one of many from that night.

Today I found a gem - a classic 'WHO' image, circa, 1975 at Madison Square Garden, during, I believe, what was a 6 night residency.

The image was on life support, deteriorated almost beyond repair from moving from place to place for over 35 years. It felt like it would fall apart in my hands if i tightened my grip. When I got this one on the light-box I knew it had to be saved so I scanned it into the digital age, converted to black and white, added back some color and was able to breathe some life back into it.

 After the Howard Stein post yesterday I got to thinking about some of his shows that I shot. Today's image is from Madison Square Garden, circa 1975. I believe they did a total of 5 shows in either September or November that year.
