Not sure exactly where this image is from - possibly Madison Square Garden circa 1975...might be Philadelphia also. I used a an on camera flash for this - it was OK back then....I think I have finally come up with a decent workflow for processing these older Ektachrome slides/tranparencies (wow transparency gives my age away)....Anyone know where this is...

I had a great time last night at the Photography Club of Lower Fairfield County....gave a presentation called 'Music, iPhone and Other Neighborhoods'....Thanks to Steve Lingeman for the invite...

This image is from the charter plane on the 2004 Van-Hagar Tour....You can make out Michael back on the right by the window....

This image of Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) is from mid-seventies in New York City - most likely the Academy of Music which was on 14th street. 

BTO were originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Acording to Wikipedia Randy Bachman and Chad Allan were formerly with The Guess Who and Neil Young apparently suggested they use Fred Turner as the vocalist. 'Takin Care of Business' and 'You Ain't Seen nothing yet' were probably two of their biggest hits.

Judging from the grain structure in this image it was most likely made using Kodak 2475 High Speed Recording Film - a favorite for ISO's of 3200 and more...It' main use was surveillance film back in the day. Personally, I always loved the grain...maybe a bit more detail but....

 Wow, last minute Sunday plans and went off to photograph The Cure at The Beacon Theater, New York City. I always like photographing at the Beacon - great sight-lines, and, as with most theaters, a great shot from the balcony (which I forgot to do yesterday)....

This band has been around since the late 70's, part of the post-punk and New Wave movements in the UK. They have been given credit for stating 'gothic rock'  in the early 80's....During the early 90's they were often called the most popular 'alternative' band in the world.

Robert Smith, The Cure 

Robert Smith is the lead singer, guitar player and main songwriter in The Cure. He was also in the band Siouxsie and the Banshees.

America's Got Talent

In Las Vegas working on America's Got Talent - three shows this weekend at The Colosseum at Caesar's Palace. This years winner was Landau Eugene Murphy who is the headline act along with Michael Grimm (last year's winner),  Jack Vidgen who won Australia's Got Talent, Silhouettes, Anna Graceman, Fighting Gravity, Poplyfe and Landon Swank.

The first rehearsals were in Los Angeles with musical director Will Hollis and have now moved to Las Vegas. Shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.....This is a fun show with some fabulous artists......

Toledo - 1Matters - Silent Auction

Silent Auction Items

Finally back home from the 1Matters Toledo trip - WOW. I was introduced so many dedicated people who volunteer their time for a great cause - helping the 'un-housed' get domestic autonomy. It was an eye opening experience. My props to these dedicated folks through which I was able to see what is possible with a 'little help from our friends'...it felt really good to be a proverbial fly on the wall watching them tirelessly work their magic.....I have started a 'face of 1Matters' on my facebook page and will be posting images of these good folks in the next week or so.

To this end I have donated almost 60 images which include vintae and new music, iPhone and personal work to the cause. This work is at the 20 North Gallery in Toledo (not sure they have updated their website yet but the work is truly there) until October 30th. One component of this show is the silent auction that includes a few signed prints - 2 Billy Joel and 2 John Mellencamp - signatures and images are below. There is also a rare Mountain photo and a canvas print of Leonard Cohen available. Below are the images in the silent auction...

Bad Company - Color EFX 4.0

Woke up this morning to an email from NIK releasing the new Color EFX 4.0 which I had pre-ordered. Color EFX 3.0 has been a favorite for quite some time but the new 4.0 has made some significant changes. You can now add filters without leaving the application. 4.0 also has a new feature for saving a recipe/preset. More info when I get a chance to play a bit more.

Wanting to jump right in I pulled up a recent scan made of the band Bad Company from the Academy of Music, circa 1976. Band members were Simon Kirke - drums, Mick Ralphs - Guitar,  Boz Burrell - Bass and Paul Rodgers - Vocals. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke were from the band FREE.....Mick Ralphs was in  Mott the Hoople. They were managed by Paul Grant who, in prior years,  had worked with Led Zeppelin. But I digress.....I was looking to make this image more appealing by adding some depth and color in the background - a bit more like the lighting you would see in a live show.

First thing I did was take one of my back-ground textures and blend it into the original image - needed some color behind the band - see below.. 

Added Background Clor

Took this image into NIK 4.0 Color EFX and used the vintage film dialog (see below)  to create a grainy look for the background. Final move was to use a brush in CS5 to paint the effect out of the players.

So after a rather quick look at the new NIK 4.0 it seems a rather useful tool to add to the workflow-still need a closer look but that will happen over the next few weeks....check it out...

Ronnie Van Zant

Found this in the archives a few days ago... I belive this was made at The Academy of Music in New York City, circa 1974...

Ronnie Van Zant was a founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Wikipedia writes that the name is a mock tribute to a high school teacher - Leonard Skinner -  who disliked men with long hair.....probably true...

For those not aware Lynyrd Skynyrd was in a horrible plane crash in 1977 traveling from South Carolina to Louisiana...Ronnie Van Zant and several other band members passed in this accident....

Skynyrd gave us songs like Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, What's Your Name and many many more....They opened for The Who on the Quadrophenia Tour 1973...

Roger McQuinn, early 1970's, , co-founder of the musical group 'The Byrds'. One of my all time favorite albums, yes albums, was 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'. Sweetheart, released in 1968, gets credit for being the first country-rock record recorded by a major artist. Special guests on this record were Gram Parsons and Clarence White. Great listen if you have the opportunity.

Musical Group Parlor James, circa 1996 was comprised of Ryan Hedgecock (formerly Lone Justice with Maria Mckee) and Amy Allison (daughter of Mose Allison). Amy and Ryan were photographed down under the Brooklyn Bridge in an old loft - an area generally known as DUMBO.

Parlor James was one of the early alternative country bands.....

As I mentioned in my iphone-antics blog this morning I am back on the road - being particularly addicted to posting images every day I reached back and pulled this one out of the archives. This is where Lightroom earns its stripes - great for processing when on the run.

The image is from the Tokyo Dome in 1984 on the Innocent Man Tour (early Christy Brinkley era), circa 1985.

Need to get out of dodge quickly this morning to start my trip to Indiana. Was cruising the archive looking for a post and this image popped up - being an Indiana type image surely this must have been planned...by someone other then me...

The shot is from the 'No Better Than This' recording session Mr. Mellencamp did at Sun Studio in Memphis.   I actually kicked myself a few times for using the Lens-Baby on this image but at the time I was really into that lens. I still use the lens but hindsight told me this should have been straight up big boy camera - one of those moments in time to look back on. On the other hand I have the image and just maybe that is alll that matters, 

That is Andy York, longtime Mellencamp guitarist on the left, Mr. Mellencamp on the right and T-Bone Burnett in the center. Was quite a thrill to watch a session at Sun....if the walls could talk...

Back in the day at concerts, meaning the late 60's and early 70's photographers were allowed to shoot the entire show - heck, you were even allowed you to shoot with flash. There was no 3 song and a cloud of dust rule.

I used to experiment with flash by shooting at various shutter speeds to get light trails using the tour lighting to paint on the image. It was impossible to see what you were doing but with some practice one could get a vague idea.

This capture of the Who was made just that way - probably one of many from that night.
