Bad Company - Color EFX 4.0

Original Image
Woke up this morning to an email from NIK releasing the new Color EFX 4.0 which I had pre-ordered. Color EFX 3.0 has been a favorite for quite some time but the new 4.0 has made some significant changes. You can now add filters without leaving the application. 4.0 also has a new feature for saving a recipe/preset. More info when I get a chance to play a bit more.

Wanting to jump right in I pulled up a recent scan made of the band Bad Company from the Academy of Music, circa 1976. Band members were Simon Kirke - drums, Mick Ralphs - Guitar,  Boz Burrell - Bass and Paul Rodgers - Vocals. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke were from the band FREE.....Mick Ralphs was in  Mott the Hoople. They were managed by Paul Grant who, in prior years,  had worked with Led Zeppelin. But I digress.....I was looking to make this image more appealing by adding some depth and color in the background - a bit more like the lighting you would see in a live show.

First thing I did was take one of my back-ground textures and blend it into the original image - needed some color behind the band - see below..

Added Background Clor
Took this image into NIK 4.0 Color EFX and used the vintage film dialog (see below)  to create a grainy look for the background. Final move was to use a brush in CS5 to paint the effect out of the players.

So after a rather quick look at the new NIK 4.0 it seems a rather useful tool to add to the workflow-still need a closer look but that will happen over the next few weeks....check it out...

Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton
Working at scanning and printing more rock and roll images over the past few weeks...Trying to get a few more images for the Music and iPhone show that opens in Toledo in October. As I mentioned over on my iPhone-antics blog I have been working with iPhone applications on the Mac and created the background for today's image in Photo Artista Haiku - blended back with the original in Photoshop CS5.

Genes

Image fr Morocco
I bought my daughter a Canon EOS Rebel T1 for Christmas last year as she wanted to pursue photography....It all started on a trip we made to the Oregon Coast where she used my 5DMKII.....It was the 5DMKII she was after but I thought starting a bit smaller was the way to go....

So fast forward to last night when she came up to the house asking for help in printing a few images from a recent trip to Morocco. This morning we met at the monitor with coffee cups in hand and started to look through the images - suddenly I realized she was quite good at seeing composition - and was duly impressed with her progress as a photographer.  We spent some time with me teaching her some photoshop - some sharpening, curves, selections and masking.....I think she had the aha moment....With her birthday three weeks away it appears that Photoshop has made it to the gift list.

After we worked on the image above I decided to make it my blog today.  I know it sounds like a proud father, well I am....Photography and music have given me back some magical moments, friends and life lessons......And passing it on does not get any better.

Genes are a powerful thing.........

Mick Jagger - 1975

Mick Jagger, 1975, Baton Rouge
This image is from the start of the Rolling Stones Tour 1975.  It was the first show with Ron Wood and had two keyboard players, Billy Preston and Ian Stewart...The tour kicked off in Baton Rouge with two shows. I was on assignment for Circus Magazine...

Took about three weeks of working on and off with this image to get it back to a presentable state. It had lived in a storage locker for who knows how many years before making it's way back into the light - no pun intended...

Photograph made using a Nikon F Series camera with Ektachrome film. Scanned into the digital world with an Imacon/Hasselblad scanning device....

Indianapolis Car Show

Found another passion this last week - photographing antique cars. As mentioned in a previous post I am loving the reflections and detail on these cars.....the craftsmanship and TLC in these vehicles is awesome.

I had planned to leave Indianapolis early on Sunday when I learned there was a large car show at the raceway home of the Indianapolis 500. On Saturday there were over 3,000 cars but with the possible rain on Sunday there were only about 750 cars. There was no lack in quality....so I stopped by on the way out of town..NOTE: The overcast day made the perfect lighting to photograph cars...

In addition to the great color and reflections they cars are a trip down memory lane - saw a few cars I actually owned - a 55 Pontiac, 55 Chevy, 57 Ford and a few others. These vehicles are like old songs and made me think about where I was when I owned a particular car....

Today's post are a few posts from the 350 images made on Sunday...

The owner of the vehicle below actually drove it to the show.....

Graham Fielder

Graham Fielder
There are times when the blog just rolls off the keyboard.....

I was in Lexington, Kentucky yesterday working on a project at the Magic Frog Studio.. I knew that my friend, Tom Fielder, had a son who is, amongst other talents,  a videographer and had made several music videos over the past few years. Being a school day, I asked Tom if he could come by and shoot a bit of 'the making of' footage for the project I am working on. I knew how talented Graham was as he has previously come out on various road projects I working on to shoot archival footage. But I had never actually watched him work in close quarters.

The point of this post is how wonderful to see a young man follow a dream and in a very humble way......taking nothing for granted....always well mannered and a fly on the wall - which is difficult at best with the video gear he was using.....It will be fun to watch him over the coming years to see what he gets into - whatever it is I am sure it will be successful...Graham kindly posed for a few test images - one of which is above.

Graham had a video premier last night on YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Spy9SiOPDCg. There are several Graham videos on YouTube but the 'Motives' video was last night premier...

PS: Did I mention Graham is high school senior and 17 years old.....I am a huge fan....

Scotland - Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle, Scotland
Inveraray Castle is located in Argyllshire, Scotland. According to Wikipedia the castle is haunted by the 'ghost of a harpist' who was hanged in 1644 for peeping at the lady of the house. There are those who say they hear mysterious sounds of a harp in the castle.

This image was made in January 2009 using a Mamiya 645DF and a phase one p65+ digital back.

Antique Car Detail

Three images from the antique car show over the weekend. I really enjoy the shapes on these old cars. They make excellent compositional elements, specifically the straight lines and the round shapes of the front end and tires. The reflective surfaces are an added bonus that really makes it for me.

They do not make them like this anymore - the attention to detail simply does not exist.

Carmel Indiana - Car Detail

Car Detail, Carmel, Inndiana
Opened the Music, iPhone and Other Neighborhoods gallery show at the Renaissance Fine Art and Design Gallery this weekend in Carmel, Indiana. Friday night there was an artist presentation with the official opening on Saturday night. The show will remain in Carmel until October 2 when it moves to Toledo, Ohio and the 20 North Gallery opening on October 7.

There was an antique car show happening today just outside the gallery so naturally today's post is a bit of classic Automobile detail. Unfortunately I was a bit rushed and never quote caught the kind of vehicle this was....stay tuned for more images from the car show.

Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger, circa 1981
Not sure what tour this is from - maybe Tattoo You??? If memory serves me well,  the Rolling Stones toured stadiums to promote the Tattoo You album in 1981. Hard to remember but I am sure someone will provide me with the answer...

Ron Wood

Ron Wood, 1975
This image is from the start of the Rolling Stones Tour in 1975. They opened in Baton Rouge and did two shows. I was on assignment for Circus Magazine.....

This image and about 60 others were just returned to me the other day after 35 years. It seems they were in a storage locker and the person who ended up with them was a friend of mine - he called and asked if I wanted them back....makes one believe......I am totally amazed and equally thrilled at how well they held up over that long a period of time....

stay tuned -more stones coming over the next month or so...Now if I can find those missing Frampon's Camel and Frank Zappa Halloween show photos....
