Zion - Weeping Rock

Zion National Park, Weeping Rock
Very quick post today - continuous water 'weeps' out the the Weeping Rock. This water comes from Echo Canyon, one of Zion's many slot canyons. One of a few seepage areas in the park, and arguably the most impressive one....The water has been on these rocks for about 1200 years.....a bit of a hie but well worth it....bring plastic bags....

Focus Bracket

Lone Tree, Zion National Park, Utah
This image was captured with a 150MM lens at F11 and the Phase One P65+ on a Mamiya 645DF.

Using a focal length of 150MM presents a few hurdles if one wants a sharp image from near to far. To counteract this one makes several exposures moving the focus so all parts of the image were in focus, albeit on different exposures. I then blend all of these images in a third party application, Helicon Focus.  Helicon will create one focused image from however many partially focused images you capture.

Well worth looking into. Helicon will also control focus on many DSLR cameras particularly when doing macro photography. Check out the link above.

Zion National Park

With my impending trip back to Zion next week I though to post this image from my first trip last November. November was the first time I had ever been in one of our National Parks and since then I have completely embraced this  American heritage. At the moment I am watching Ken Burns 6 part series on The National Parks and it truly is America's Best Idea.

I must admit the first trip was completely overwhelming to me both in the technical sense and even more so artistically. Basically I had no idea how to approach capturing the breadth and width of Zion - I am quite sure this is the same as someone visiting New York City for the first time and being overwhelmed by the scale of the new surroundings, the difference being that New York is man made and Zion has been around for millions of years.

Since then I have been able to visit  Death Valley, Yosemite and the Redwoods of Northern, California and have a plan to visit all the others in due course.

Anyway, even though fraught with a few technical glitches, here is one image from Zion. Hopefully on this next visit I will have the opportunity to re-capture this image with some newly learned skills.

Old Truck - Broken Headlight

That title sounds like a Neil Young song...

Late post today - up at 5AM this morning and fairly worn out tonight.

This image is from the Zion National Park sequence from last November.

Going to bed now - one more day of commitments outside of Photoshop.

Long weekend coming up - just in time.
