March Morning Caddo Lake

Cold March Morning on Caddo Lake, Uncertain, Texas
Found one this morning from last March at Caddo Lake. Passed it over completely the first time around but it jumped out at me this morning - and it was a really cold morning out there in the boat....hoping to get back to the lake in the fall....

Red Door - Christiania

Red Door_Christiania

OK, I did go back one more time to Christiania - I told everyone I was obsessed with the place. There was an iPhone image made on one of the previous trips that I liked so much that it was necessary to go back with my big boy camera and make a high res image.

So this morning I got up, packed as we were heading for Berlin today, showered, and made it over to Christiania for another hour of photographs....Really glad I went back as I got th eimage I was after and a few more that were unexpected....It was one of those great light days with perfect clouds in the sky. And if that was not enough a woman parked her bike right in the image perfectly and walked away...not that gives new meaning to 'meant to be'....

Hopefully this is it from Christiania but maybe not.........

Mime - Copenhagen

Mime, Copenhagen, Denmark
Lately I seem to be attracted to portrait work.....shooting a good deal with prime lenses, specifically the 85MM and 135MM Canon. Have also been making portraits with the iPhone4 using the Hipstamatic Camera which have a completely different more organic feel. You can see the Hipstamatic Portraits on my iPhone blog - http://iPhone-Antics.blogspot.com.

Christiania

I am not able to blog today. Something is not right with Blogspot - they seem to be having upload issues for images.

I will, however take the time to thank everyone for following my blog over the past 18 months. It has been quite the strange trip (as the Grateful Dead would say) posting images everyday. I learn from the feedback I get and from simply working on images on a daily basis.

Currently I am in Copenhagen and will be traveling to other locations in Europe over the next few weeks..SO keep an eye out for new images.

Just a reminder that I have started a new website, http://harrysandler.com, and for the first time my images are for sale. Please email me if there is any interest.

best,

PS: I posted a new image from Christiania on Facebook today. The image is of a typical dwelling in Christiania - although this one is probably more on the modern side....The link is below:

Wordpress

Iceland 2010
Today is one of those days when no image seems worthy of a blog post. So here I sit with not one thing in my head...thinking writing might be the way to clear it out and come up with something. In the past this has been dealt with by an image jumping off the page and then adding a favorite quote. Never entered my mind how hard it would be to post an image every day - specifically when I have spent the last few weeks not shooting that much. So I am thinking why not write about what I have working on.

Iceland 2010
Over the past few weeks most of my time has been spent revising/rebuilding my website. I have been struggling for several years with a lack of technical ability on this platform versus my ability to change the site on the fly. Most websites are written in super secret code and  need a webmaster who makes changes and the others that allow simple and quick changes just never appealed to me.  Oh, I wanted a few bells and whistles but in the end it became about the images and my ability to make changes wherever I happen to be in the world. Two weeks ago my friend Jeff Johnson in Florida came up with the perfect solution - WORDPRESS using a PHOTOCRATI THEME. Wordpress has so many solutions for those who want control of changes while giving some neat bells and whistles. Now I am my own Webmaster and can make my own changes - all I need is internet and my laptop...

Mesquite Dunes, Death valley
Long story short here is the new website - http://harrysandler.com. This site will be kept up to date with where I am in the world. my workshops, presentations and classes, links to my two blogs, and, for the first time, I am making my work available for purchase. In the footer there are links to my social media pages and also an email link to the webmaster, me......

Thanks to Jeff Johnson for all of his technical help getting this done......

Death Valley

State Line Road, Death Valley
'To me, photography is an art of observation. It is about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I have found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them'......Elliott Erwitt

There are times you are just in the right place at the right time.

I have spent many hours driving between Death Valley and Las Vegas - the key being to get to Death Valley as quickly as possible. You drive these roads and never notice what is off to the side of the road. And, once you have packed your gear for the trip back to Las Vegas you have a built in excuse for not wanting to stop. Wrong!!!!!

Recently I stopped packing the gear until Vegas was in my windshield and even then I sometimes wait until the rental car return.....The image above was made on one of these trips back to Vegas..... only this time I stopped. The old wise men say that when you think you have the image - turn around and see what you are missing. I learned to stop and look left and right of the highway -

Found this wonderful abandoned house on the way to Shelter Island this weekend. Yet another testimonial to a dis-appearing America. Can't help but wonder if walls could talk.....

Meet Thy God

One Eye Open.....
This image is from the 1995. I was driving back from the opening concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with my friend Liz Mahon and we were splitting the driving between major highway and back roads....This image wa made somewhere on a backroad in Ohio....

While the RRHOF was opening there was another event coming to closure - the OJ Simpson trial....I clearly remember being in a general store watching the verdict....

The words at the top of the structure say "To Meet Thy God".... Looking back this image seems rather ironic today.

'It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment'.......Ansel Adams

I always walk away from images like this feeling honored to have been at this place at this time....to see nature offer up this scene...Someone once mentioned that as a photographer if we have 300 images that we like at the end - and have averaged 1/60th of a second - our work took 5 minutes. BUT WHAT A FIVE MINUTES....

Waterfall - Iceland

Waterfall, Iceland
This image was made last August while traveling in Iceland with Focus on Nature. Focus on Nature runs Photographic Workshops each summer, run by Einar Erlendsson. Einar and his crew make sure everyone is well taken care of from pick-up at the airport on arrival until he drops you back at the airport for the trip home - leaving was most difficult so I am going back this summer.

Iceland is one of the most beautiful places to visit and photograph - one of the most diverse locations one could imagine. Everything from serene farmland to mountain one lane roads, and, of course volcanoes waterfalls, and glaciers.....a must visit even for non-photographers.

I wrote Einar this morning asking for the location of this waterfall and will post tomorrow - I simply did not take good enough notes...

Jupiter Beach

As mentioned in previous blogs I am always attracted to water - specifically fast moving water. This image is from Jupiter Beach last year - one of those mornings where all the pieces come together at the same time. I saw my friend Doug Eng last week (who I was with that morning) and he reminded  me how magical that morning was.

Dancing with the Stars

Change of pace today. I was lucky enough to have produced several Dancing with the Stars Live Tours over the past 6 years, and, of course, always had a camera nearby. This image is Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff - most likely form the 2009 winter tour opening in San Diego.

Halloween Pumpkins

Palenville Pumpkins
Searching the archives again this morning and came across this image from the Hudson Valley. I was at a Dan Burkholder workshop in October 2008 when we stumbled upon this abandoned house in front of which someone had placed the two pumpkins. I really like this image but have never felt good about the processing.  Today I am giving it a shot with selective color....might just work...

Phish

Phish, PNC Art Center

I had an opportunity to photograph the band Phish last Wednesday at the PNC Bank Art Center located at exit 16 on the Garden State Parkway....I was given total access to the pit and was able to shoot the entire show - approximately 1,000 images - narrowed down the the best 105...

And quite an entertaining evening it was. In addition to seeing some old friends from the music business I was treated to a two-set three hour show by the band. I really like the old school 'give the audience what it wants' point of view that is hard to find at most shows. The band played for 90 minutes, took a break, and played for another 90 minutes.

The audience sung every word and seemed know each song within a few seconds after the band started playing. Nice to see that type of loyal fan - and the ticket price was very affordable - another thought that is lost among so many acts these days. Phish might not be everyone's cup of tea but it was certainly nice to see that level of professionalism.

It reminded me of the 60's in San Francisco when after the show it was difficult to tell the performers from the audience....a nice memory for me...

The image posted above was made with a Canon 5DMKII using a Zeiss 21mm lens. Processed partially in the iPad2 for a slightly different look.

Everglades National Park

As most of you know the Ken Burn's mini-series on The National Parks was a huge influence on my photography. Having grown up with little or no knowledge of these great American treasures it was quite inspiring to finally see the history of what he called 'America's Greatest Treasure'. Needless to say this immediately gained a high spot on my 'bucket list'...

Today's image was made while cruising out on the 10,000 lake area of Chokoloskee Bay, a part of our Everglades National Park. Obviously a very spontaneous moment, but then there are so many of these moments at this type of location - the images are regularly some of my favorites.

Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall

This image was made about 18 months ago inside Radio City Music Hall. The comedian, Russell Peters was doing two nights at RCMH and I was hired to photograph the event. Before the first show I decided to make the image posted today.

Photographed using the Canon 5DMKII, 16-36MM Lens - this is an 8 image HDR processed using NIK software.
