Fire Island July 4th

Fire Island, July 4th Parade, 1994
Fire Island is is a barrier island just off the south shore of Long Island. They say it is approx. 30 miles long and between 520 and 1300 feet wide...and has maybe 500 permanent residents...

The island is reachable in the summer by ferry which means no cars allowed....perfect place for kids....

On July 4th every year there is a parade. Kids dress in costumes, make elaborate floats using wagons and bike.....and march through Ocean Beach, one of the hamlets that dot this island...

Today's image is my look at the judging/viewing stand for the parade....

Desbrosses Street Window

Desbrosses Street, New York City

Back in the mid 90's I worked at a loft in Tribeca just south of Canal street near the Holland tunnel. I passed this window every day and the blinds and curtains were almost always in some state of dance. This particular day it seemed to say 'take a photograph' so I did....Two weeks later the blinds and curtains were gone.....they went to a more modern window treatment that no longer resonated for me...

That is me in the window.....but of course

Photographed with a Pentax 67, Tri-X film, scanned into the digital space using an Imacon/Hasselblad scanning device

Childhood

Fire Island, New York
There are days when I feel like a photographic chameleon. One second I am working on or teaching iPhone imagery and the next I am into landscape with a high res digital camera. But the images that always touch me the most are personal and have historical value on several levels. Not due to the fact that I know or am related to the participants, but because they relate to periods in my life - whatever the underlying reason may be.

Today's image is from the series  'Childhood and other Neighborhoods' which I have been working on for several years. I am starting to feel the series is close to coming out of the darkness.

The image was captured using a Pentax 67 and Tri-X 400 film - scanned into the digital world using a Hasselblad/Imacon scanner, circa 1994.
