The Who

Some good friends are coming over next week from Scotland to see The Who perform in New York which led me to search the archives for a couple images I made in 1974 at Madison Square Garden.

They did 4 shows Dec 10, 11, 13 and 14 and I was able to photograph all 4 nights for Circus Magazine. In those days you could shoot the entire show and use a flash if you wanted. I did both...

Truly the golden age of rock and roll......

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel, Genesis
Peter Gabriel from the concept tour 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The original image was an Ektachrome transparency moved into the digital world using an Imacon/Hasselbald scanner.

Of late I have been using NIK software and Photoshop quite a bit and this image was re-processed with a new workflow - those who follow my blog know I am huge fan of re-working images in this manner - always something new to learn.

'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' was a concept album (yes album - round disk with grooves) circa 1976 followed by a tour of the same name...

Ronnie Van Zant

Ronnie Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Found this in the archives a few days ago... I belive this was made at The Academy of Music in New York City, circa 1974...

Ronnie Van Zant was a founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Wikipedia writes that the name is a mock tribute to a high school teacher - Leonard Skinner -  who disliked men with long hair.....probably true...

For those not aware Lynyrd Skynyrd was in a horrible plane crash in 1977 traveling from South Carolina to Louisiana...Ronnie Van Zant and several other band members passed in this accident....

Skynyrd gave us songs like Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, What's Your Name and many many more....They opened for The Who on the Quadrophenia Tour 1973...

Johnny Winter

Johnny Winter, Madison Square Garden
This image made at Madison Square Garden in the early 70's....Note that they had people sitting right on the stage - such a different time in live music......not only that but you cold shoot the entire show and use flash if necessary...I was never much of a flashy on camera guy but in this case it helped to show the folks on stage......killed the stage lighting but had to get the shot...

Photographed with a Nikon F series camera using ektachrome color slide film
transferred to the digital world using an Imacon scanner

This image was made about 18 months ago inside Radio City Music Hall. The comedian, Russell Peters was doing two nights at RCMH and I was hired to photograph the event. Before the first show I decided to make the image posted today.

Photographed using the Canon 5DMKII, 16-36MM Lens - this is an 8 image HDR processed using NIK software.

Van Halen

Van Halen, circa 2004
Just got home from Philadelphia. I was caught in a quick hitting snow storm dropping one inch per hour on the 'City of Brotherly Love' - had to spend the night in a hotel and drive back today.

Quick post from the archives today.....Van Halen with Sammy Hagar - end of show in Pennsylvania in 2004.... Hershey I believe

Now for a nap....

Todd Rundgren

Found another image from the 1970's - Todd Rundgren in Central Park at Summer Stage.

Summer Stage was one of the fun New York venues every summer in Central Park. For some reason there was a large mirror that hung on the downstage end tilted down in toward the muscisians. Not quite sure but perhaps this had something to do with lighting the artists as we were still in the early days of the technical enhancements we have today.

At any rate you can see this photographer standing in the back in a black t-shirt and jeans. Note the Pentax one degree spot meter hanging from my neck - great for determining a zone system exposure. I also counted no less then three other photographers walking around the stage - something that would never happen today.

I always said that back in the day one could never tell the artists from the audience and crew...
