Katy Perry, Dubai

For the past several months I have been doing some tour management work for Katy Perry. Having the opportunity to see Katy on stage - makes me appreciate her musical talent, sense of humor and overall artistry.

A few weeks ago we traveled to Dubai for one last show in 2012. The event was the closing ceremony for the World Parachute Championships with the concert being held on the Meydan Racetrack just outside the city. Of course Katy came up with an interesting way to start the show - arriving on stage using a parachute!!!

Stay tuned for more images from Dubai....

The Who

Some good friends are coming over next week from Scotland to see The Who perform in New York which led me to search the archives for a couple images I made in 1974 at Madison Square Garden.

They did 4 shows Dec 10, 11, 13 and 14 and I was able to photograph all 4 nights for Circus Magazine. In those days you could shoot the entire show and use a flash if you wanted. I did both...

Truly the golden age of rock and roll......

Night of Too Many Stars, The Beacon Theater

NOTMS, The Beacon theater
It wasn’t too many, but it was a lot. Comedy Central co-hosted “Night of Too Many Stars,” a benefit for autism education Saturday in New York City. The evening, which funds a variety of autism-education programs around the United States, was hosted by Jon Stewart and will be broadcast Oct. 21 on Comedy Central. See who turned out to do a good deed.Last

I was lucky enough to be working with Katy Perry who played the event doing a duet with Jodi DiPiazza, an autistic youngster with the special gift of music.  The duet was the highlight of my night as well as most individuals in attendance. They gave Katy and Jodi a standing ovation and my guess is there was not a dry eye in the house.

Here is a link to the show on Comedy Central, http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/night-of-too-many-stars

Roger McGuinn Composite

There are times when one is minding his own business and an idea shows up that must be dealt with immediately - never quite sure why or where it comes from - it suddenly just steps forward. And over the years I have learned to jump on these ideas to see where it takes me.....today was no exception.

This afternoon I was looking through my lightroom catalog and come across this image of Roger McGuinn from the 70's and the idea of putting a texture on the image comes to mind....I went in to the texture folder and the first one that I see works for me - then the idea of text comes into my mind and I was off an running....

I have no idea why this happened but I am glad it did.....Hopefully there are a few more ideas in there....and they are all welcome around here.......

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel, Genesis
Peter Gabriel from the concept tour 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The original image was an Ektachrome transparency moved into the digital world using an Imacon/Hasselbald scanner.

Of late I have been using NIK software and Photoshop quite a bit and this image was re-processed with a new workflow - those who follow my blog know I am huge fan of re-working images in this manner - always something new to learn.

'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' was a concept album (yes album - round disk with grooves) circa 1976 followed by a tour of the same name...

Kenny Aronoff, Drummer

Drummer Kenny Aronoff
Hitting the way-back time machine today. This image from the mid-nineties made in Bloomington, Indiana when Kenny was drumming for John Mellencamp. At the time I was Mr. Mellencamp's Tour Manager and we were making images for a book that would be sold on the upcoming tour. I was in a 4x5 camera phase at the time and albeit this image slightly soft I have always wanted to see it finished - and that has now been accomplished.

Kenny has played with John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, Chickenfoot and so many others. He is also a session drummer and I am sure on more then a few albums or CD's in your collection. Check out the Kenny Aronoff website for more information.

First Baptist Church, Savannah, Georgia

First baptist Church, Savannah
A few years back in my last life as a Rock and Roll Tour Director I happened to be in Savannah, Georgia working on an album project. We were spending a few days recording in Savannah at The First African Baptist Church, circa 1773, organized by the Reverend George Lelle. The original name for the church was 'Fist Colored Baptist' and this structure also housed the first black Sunday school in North America. Apparently the basement of this church was part of the underground railway as the floor had small bullet type holes to let air into the sub-basement. I was honored to be able to spend those few days in the historic location.

Today's images are a few from those few days in Savannah....

Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger, circa 1981
Not sure what tour this is from - maybe Tattoo You??? If memory serves me well,  the Rolling Stones toured stadiums to promote the Tattoo You album in 1981. Hard to remember but I am sure someone will provide me with the answer...

Ron Wood

Ron Wood, 1975
This image is from the start of the Rolling Stones Tour in 1975. They opened in Baton Rouge and did two shows. I was on assignment for Circus Magazine.....

This image and about 60 others were just returned to me the other day after 35 years. It seems they were in a storage locker and the person who ended up with them was a friend of mine - he called and asked if I wanted them back....makes one believe......I am totally amazed and equally thrilled at how well they held up over that long a period of time....

stay tuned -more stones coming over the next month or so...Now if I can find those missing Frampon's Camel and Frank Zappa Halloween show photos....

Poco

Poco, Academy of Music, New York City
I am not quite sure which version of Poco this image is from but my best guess is the 1973-1976 line-up which included:

Timothy B Schmit - Bass
Rusty Young - Pedal Steel, Dobro, Banjo
George Grantham - Drums, vocals
Paul Cotton - guitars, vocals

This photograph was taken at the Academy of Music in New York City.

Image made with a Nikon F Series Camera, Ektachrome Slide Film

I was lucky enough to be included in an article about Tour Managers in this months issue of Elmore Magazine. The link is below - note that the article starts on Page 12..It was written by a up and coming young music writer, Melissa Caruso...keep your eye out for her byline.....

Johnny Winter

Johnny Winter, Madison Square Garden
This image made at Madison Square Garden in the early 70's....Note that they had people sitting right on the stage - such a different time in live music......not only that but you cold shoot the entire show and use flash if necessary...I was never much of a flashy on camera guy but in this case it helped to show the folks on stage......killed the stage lighting but had to get the shot...

Photographed with a Nikon F series camera using ektachrome color slide film
transferred to the digital world using an Imacon scanner
